Mastering is the step beyond the mixing. Taking the finished stereo mix-down of all the tracks and adding the finishing compression, EQ, loudness standard, META data, and all the little things that get it ready to publish. It takes finely-tuned ears and audio equipment, and is an INCREDIBLY important final step.
